A Cliffside Wellness Retreat in Milos Carved Between Stone and the Aegean Sea
Carved into the cliffs of Milos, The White Descent unfolds towards the Aegean through terraces, courtyards and quiet spaces of retreat.
Set above a remote bay on the southern coast of Milos, The White Descent is conceived as a gradual architectural journey from the dry island landscape towards the sea. Rather than placing a singular building on the cliff, Studio Thalassa embedded the 1,920-square-metre retreat within the natural slope. A sequence of limestone walls, shaded passages and planted courtyards descends towards the coastline. Arrival takes place at the highest point of the site. From here, a narrow stone passage reveals the Aegean gradually, framing fragments of blue water between sculpted walls. Guest suites are positioned across individual terraces. Each space is partially embedded within the earth and opens towards a private courtyard or infinity pool. At the centre of the retreat, a circular wellness pavilion contains treatment rooms, a hammam and a sunken thermal pool illuminated through a single overhead opening. The main restaurant occupies a broad terrace overlooking the bay. Retractable glazing allows the interior to open completely to the landscape, while pale oak, limestone and brushed bronze create a restrained material palette. Passive environmental strategies shape the project. Earth-sheltered spaces provide thermal stability, while deep terraces and cross-ventilation reduce dependence on mechanical cooling. The White Descent is defined by movement and discovery—an architecture that reveals the landscape slowly through shadow, stone, wind and the changing presence of the Aegean Sea.
