Set within the vast Atacama Desert, Atacama Horizon creates a luxury retreat where architecture frames silence, stars and the endless desert landscape.
Located on the edge of the Atacama Desert near San Pedro, Atacama Horizon is conceived as a collection of low earthen pavilions that disappear into the surrounding landscape. Rather than competing with the vastness of the desert, Estudio Horizonte designed the 2,140-square-metre retreat as a quiet extension of the terrain. Guests arrive through a narrow passage carved between monumental rammed-earth walls before entering a shaded central courtyard anchored by desert planting, volcanic stone and a long reflecting pool. The sequence creates an intentional transition from the harsh desert environment into a calm architectural sanctuary. Private guest suites are distributed across the site, each opening onto secluded courtyards with plunge pools and uninterrupted views of the surrounding mountains. Retractable glazing allows the interiors to merge with shaded terraces while preserving privacy. The main lodge brings together dining, lounge and wellness spaces beneath a sculptural timber roof. Warm Chilean timber, volcanic stone and corten steel create a restrained material palette that reflects the colours of the surrounding desert. A dedicated astronomical observatory occupies the highest point of the property. Designed with minimal artificial lighting, it offers uninterrupted views of one of the darkest night skies on Earth, allowing the architecture to celebrate the Atacama's internationally renowned stargazing conditions. Passive environmental strategies define the project. Thick rammed-earth walls regulate indoor temperatures, while rooftop solar arrays, rainwater harvesting and carefully oriented openings reduce operational energy demands. Atacama Horizon is an architecture of stillness—where earth, light and the infinite desert sky become the true luxury.
