Perched above the rugged shoreline of Lofoten, House of the Tides creates a contemporary Arctic home shaped by ocean, timber and changing northern light.

Located along a remote stretch of Norway's Lofoten coastline, House of the Tides is conceived as a series of elevated timber volumes resting lightly above granite outcrops. Rather than reshaping the dramatic coastal terrain, Studio Nordlys allowed the architecture to follow the natural contours of the site, preserving native vegetation and uninterrupted views of the Norwegian Sea. Arrival begins along a raised timber boardwalk that weaves between coastal grasses before reaching a sheltered entrance courtyard protected from the prevailing Arctic winds. The residence is organised into three interconnected pavilions linked by glazed bridges. The primary living pavilion projects towards the ocean, where floor-to-ceiling glazing frames panoramic views of the fjord, distant mountains and the ever-changing northern sky. A suspended wood-burning fireplace anchors the interior, creating warmth against the dramatic coastal landscape. Materiality reflects the surrounding environment. Weathering steel develops a natural patina over time, while Norwegian granite, Nordic oak and pale timber interiors create a calm, tactile atmosphere. The principal suite occupies the most secluded pavilion and opens onto a private ocean-facing deck with a heated plunge pool overlooking the tides. Passive environmental strategies define the project. Elevated construction protects the fragile landscape, while triple glazing, geothermal heating and highly insulated timber walls ensure year-round comfort in one of Norway's most demanding climates. House of the Tides explores a quiet relationship between architecture and the sea—where changing tides, shifting weather and Arctic light become the defining elements of everyday living.
